My first German spitz....the Swergspitz or toy GS,
my incomparable
POMERANIAN
Before my love affair with the German Spitz mittel began , I became utterly enchanted by a tiny dog who was to become the true love of my life, a Pomeranian I called BILL. The Pom is the smallest version of the five different sizes of the German Spitz, smallest in size but not in courage nor intelligence .
I began training Bill as an entrant in Companion Dog trials .This dearest little soul weighed only two kg and if it was windy, his little body could hardly stand upright so the exams and the recalls were a daunting affair indeed for him. Nevertheless he tried and he was loved by judges and competitors alike as a tough litle worker. However, even sharp blades of grass were too much for his little feet sometimes so he was retired from the trial ring to become my little toy boy, sitting on top of my show trolley at conformation shows with the mittels .

Bill had the heart of a lion and was loved by all.He spent his brief life with all of us at Merrifox as the grand master flash of the household and of his beloved black mittel ,Girlie.
Girlie was purchased as a black Pomeranian to be a companion for Bill. But she grew and grew and finally towered over him and weighed four times as much. They adored each other and Girlie could not face life without him.
Girlie became the first trialler to title for me. She titled as a CD dog ( Companion Dog ) in 1998 and was indeed, the first unofficial mittel I had trialled with success. She was described as an honest little worker but she really didnt like the loneliness of the trial arena and although working beautifully at CDX , would only perform in demonstration and not in competition. This was probably my ring nerves impacting on her which was a great shame as she was a wonderful little heeler and good retriever.

Thankyou Bill and Girlie
Without the courage and devotion of these little souls, I would not be trialling with my mittels today. The Pom is an overlooked little worker in Obedience and as a toy breed has so much to offer the world.
SO
Why did I choose a German Spitz? The intelligence nd beauty of the breed cannot be questioned. I wanted a hardy, medium sized dog of substance, durability and flowing movement, coupled with an independent nature.
